Socket installation in Singapore covers adding a new power point, replacing a worn or damaged socket, and converting a single socket to a double. Adding a power point in an HDB flat or condo involves wiring from a circuit and must be done by a licensed electrical worker. Before booking, say where the socket is needed, what it will power and whether the wiring can be surface-run or must be concealed.

Replacing a socket or adding a new one?

Replacing a socket on an existing point mainly involves disconnecting the old socket and fitting a new one in the same position. Adding a new power point means running wiring from a suitable circuit to the new position, which takes longer and may involve trunking or chasing into walls.

Common socket jobs
JobWhat it usually involvesWhat to ask
Replace a damaged socketSwap the socket on the existing pointIs the wiring behind it also checked?
Single to double socketReplace the faceplate and possibly the boxDoes the circuit suit the extra load?
Add a new power pointNew wiring from a circuit to the new positionSurface trunking or concealed wiring?
Dedicated point for an applianceSeparate circuit or isolator for high-power useWhich circuit and protection does it need?
Outdoor or service yard socketWeatherproof socket in a damp areaIs the socket rated for the location?

High-power appliances such as water heaters, ovens, hobs and aircon units usually need their own dedicated points or isolators rather than a general socket. Tell the electrician what the socket will power so they can recommend the right arrangement.

Licensed electrical work

Socket work involves the home's electrical installation and must be carried out by a licensed electrical worker. EMA's guidance on engaging licensed workers explains how to engage one, and the licensed electrician guide explains what to ask. In HDB flats, the HDB guidance on electrical works also applies.

Do not replace sockets yourself or use adaptors and extension leads as a permanent fix for too few sockets. Overloaded adaptors can overheat. EMA's electrical safety guidance explains the risks.

Surface or concealed wiring

New wiring can run on the wall surface inside trunking, or be concealed in the wall or ceiling. Surface trunking is quicker and less disruptive but visible. Concealed wiring looks neater but involves chasing walls or working above a false ceiling, then making good. Ask the electrician to explain both options and their costs for your wall.

During renovation, plan socket positions before carpentry and tiling, so wiring can be concealed easily. Think about where furniture, TVs, desks and kitchen appliances will go, and add enough sockets to avoid extension leads. The HDB electrical work guide covers planning in more detail.

Signs a socket needs attention

Replace or check a socket if it is cracked, scorched, loose in the wall, warm to the touch or sparks when you plug in. A socket that no longer holds plugs firmly can cause poor connections and overheating. Switch off the circuit at the distribution board and call an electrician.

If a socket stops working and other sockets on the same circuit also fail, a breaker may have tripped. The power trip guide explains what to check safely.

How socket installation is priced

Electricians usually price socket work per point, with different rates for replacing a socket, adding a single or double point and installing a dedicated point. Concealed wiring, long cable runs, high walls and making good cost more.

The published rates further down this page come from company websites in the HomezyPro directory, one matching rate per company with its source and capture date. Check each source for whether the price is for a replacement or a new point, whether the wiring is surface or concealed and what is included.

  • Is the price for replacing a socket or adding a new point?
  • Is the wiring surface-run or concealed?
  • Is the socket supplied, and which type?
  • Is making good included after concealed wiring?
  • Is there a minimum charge, and is GST included?

USB, smart and switched sockets

Many sockets now come with USB charging ports, smart controls or individual switches. Check that the faceplate fits the existing box, especially when replacing an older socket, and ask whether a deeper box is needed. Smart sockets may need a neutral connection or a stable home network to work properly.

If you choose a feature socket, buy it from a reputable supplier and confirm it is suitable for use in Singapore. Ask the electrician whether they install customer-supplied sockets and how that affects the warranty.

Preparing for the visit

Mark where you want each new socket and note what it will power. Clear furniture away from the wall, and know where your distribution board is. Tell the electrician about any existing problems, such as sockets that do not work or breakers that trip.

After the job, test each socket with a lamp or small appliance, check that faceplates are secure and that any trunking is neat. Keep the invoice and the name of the licensed worker with your home records.

Socket installation questions

Can I add a power point in my HDB flat?

Adding a power point involves electrical work, which must be done by a licensed electrical worker and follow HDB's guidance on electrical works. Ask the electrician to confirm what applies to your job.

Is it cheaper to replace a socket than to add a new one?

Usually. Replacing a socket on an existing point is simpler than adding a new point, which needs wiring. Ask the electrician to price each separately.

Can I use a double adaptor instead of adding a socket?

For occasional use, a good-quality adaptor may be fine, but relying on adaptors and extension leads for high-power appliances can overload a socket. Adding a socket is safer for regular use.

Do aircon and water heaters need special sockets?

They usually need dedicated points or isolators rather than general sockets. Tell the electrician the appliance and its power rating so they can recommend the right arrangement.
