How to care for sofas and curtains between professional cleans

Simple habits to keep sofas and curtains fresh between professional cleans: vacuuming, safe spot cleaning, sun and humidity, and when to book help.

Why everyday care matters

Sofas and curtains collect dust, skin flakes, cooking smells and humidity every day. A professional clean resets them, but what you do in between decides how quickly they look tired again. A few small habits can keep fabric fresher, reduce stains and stretch the time between professional visits.

This article covers that everyday care. For what a professional job involves, the sofa and carpet cleaning guide and the curtain cleaning guide explain the methods and what to ask a company.

Start with the care label

Before you clean anything, check the care label. Sofas often have a tag under a seat cushion or on the base, and curtains usually have one sewn into a seam. The label tells you whether the fabric can take water, solvent-based cleaners, both or neither.

  • Water-based cleaning allowed: mild soap and water spot cleaning is usually fine.
  • Solvent only: avoid water, which can leave rings or shrink the fabric.
  • Professional cleaning only: limit yourself to vacuuming and blotting.
  • No label: test any cleaner on a hidden spot first, or leave it to a professional.

Keep a photo of each label on your phone. It saves time when a spill happens and helps a cleaning company choose the right method.

Vacuum regularly

Dust and grit are the quiet enemies of upholstery. They work into the weave and wear the fibres every time someone sits down. Vacuuming once a week with an upholstery attachment removes most of it.

For sofas, remove the cushions and vacuum the seat base, the crevices and the sides. Turn and fluff the cushions as you put them back. For curtains, use a soft brush attachment on a low setting and work from top to bottom. Pay attention to the folds and hems, where dust settles.

Deal with spills quickly and safely

The faster you act, the easier a spill is to remove. Follow these steps for most spills on fabric that allows water-based cleaning.

  • Blot, do not rub: press a clean white cloth onto the spill to lift as much liquid as you can. Rubbing pushes it deeper and can damage the pile.
  • Work from the outside in: this stops the stain from spreading.
  • Use a little water first: dampen a cloth with plain water and blot again before trying any product.
  • Try a mild solution: a drop of gentle detergent in water, applied sparingly with a cloth, rinsed by blotting with plain water.
  • Dry it well: blot with a dry cloth, then let the area air dry with a fan running.

Avoid soaking the fabric, since water can reach the foam inside a cushion and lead to odours or mould. Do not use bleach, strong stain removers or mixes of products on upholstery.

For grease, ink, wine or pet accidents that do not lift with a mild solution, stop and call a professional. Repeated home treatment can set a stain permanently.

Sunlight, humidity and mould

Singapore's climate is hard on fabric. Strong sunlight fades colours and weakens fibres, while humidity encourages musty smells and mould.

To protect against sun, draw sheer curtains or blinds during the brightest part of the day, especially on west-facing windows. If one side of a sofa gets more sun, rotate its position or the cushions now and then.

To manage humidity, let air move around fabric. Open windows when the weather allows, run a fan, and avoid pushing the sofa tight against an outer wall where condensation can collect. Make sure curtains are not left damp after rain blows in. If you notice small dark spots or a musty smell, act early: air the fabric, run a fan or dehumidifier and arrange a professional clean before it spreads.

Curtain-specific habits

Curtains are easy to forget because they hang out of the way.

  • Shake them gently or give them a light vacuum every week or two.
  • Open them fully each day so the folds can air out.
  • Keep them away from the hob and cooking areas, where grease builds up.
  • Check the lining and hems for damp patches after heavy rain.
  • Note whether your curtains can be washed at home or need dry cleaning or steam cleaning.

Some fabrics and linings can shrink or warp in a washing machine. When in doubt, ask a company whether it can clean them in place or take them down for cleaning. The steam cleaning guide explains one method often used for curtains and upholstery.

When to book a professional

Everyday care slows wear but does not replace a deep clean. Book a professional when fabric looks dull or greyish all over, when smells linger after airing, when a stain does not lift with gentle treatment, or after an illness, a pet accident or a renovation.

If you hire through a company, it is reasonable to ask whether it holds a licence. NEA's cleaning business licence page explains which cleaning businesses need one.

Many companies publish rates for curtain cleaning. The table shows the lowest matching rate each company publishes, with the source and capture date. These are advertised rates with conditions, not quotes; check whether the price covers take-down and rehanging.

Questions

How often should I vacuum my sofa and curtains?

Vacuum the sofa once a week with an upholstery attachment, including under the cushions. Curtains need a light vacuum or shake every week or two, working from top to bottom.

What is the safest way to treat a spill on a sofa?

Check the care label first, then blot rather than rub, working from the outside in. Try plain water, then a mild detergent solution if the label allows it, and never mix cleaning products.

When should I call a professional instead of cleaning it myself?

Call a professional when a stain does not lift with gentle treatment, when smells linger, when fabric looks dull all over or when the label says professional cleaning only.
